Next up on the Dapper Chapper Bar is Aberlour’s 12 YO Sherry Cask.
The Aberlour distillery has been consistently recognised internationally with an abundance of gold medals, including best single malt, so we were expecting big things at DC HQ.
Aberlour is located in the heart of the Speyside region surrounded by Ben Rinnes. As a Speyside Whisky they produce exceptional soft, pure spring water from the natural springs that are nearby.
The 12 Year Old Sherry Cask Matured that we were sent, is a unique whisky from the prestigious range of Aberlour Single Malts. The difference here is this single malt has been exclusively matured in fresh Oloroso Sherry Casks.
These casks, which were previously used to mature sherry in southern Spain, are some of the most precious and expensive used in the world of whisky for maturing single malts. One detail we discovered (and liked) was that each year, Arbelour’s Master Distiller travels to Spain and personally selects the casks which will contribute so much to the maturation of Aberlour.
The sherry casks differ from the normal range because during the 12 years the whisky spends in the cask the single malt develops a rich and complex taste, producing an exceptional balance and colour.
The colour is ruby copper with hints of gold. On the nose, sweet sherry comes first with hints of apples and honey following. The palate experiences a richer texture of Christmas—cake toffee, marmalade and honey. The finish is soothing with flashes of ginger and caramel.
The whisky is encased in packaging that fits perfectly with the product. The bottles appearance is simple, charming and evoking feeling of the heritage whilst still remaining fairly modern is not out of place on the Dapper Chapper Bar.
Here’s the point where we’d recommend the Dapper Chapper Cocktail but in this instance there is no need. All we suggest is you add a dash of water to your dram. This will change the flavour giving complexity to the taste and give you a totally different experience.
A big thumbs up from DC HQ – Enjoy.
