We might well have found our favourite event of the summer so far. We all know how partial we are to a bit of Scotch Whisky here at The Dapper Chapper, so when the Scotch Malt Whisky Society get in touch we automatically get very excited.
However, this particular invite got us particularly hot under the collar with excitement – and that’s not just because of the soaring heat wave on London right now. Indeed this invitation combined finest Scotch Whisky with one of the best things about hot, sunny weather…..ice cream.
Yep that’s right…Whisky and Ice Cream. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society have teamed up with one of Edinburgh’s most famous Ice Cream makers – S Luca to create a unique range of whisky infused ice-creams.
I have to admit we were dubious at first – how on earth are whisky and ice cream going to go together. We arrived at the famous Scotch Malt Whisky Society building in Farringdon excited that we’d be getting to sample some of their finest whiskies, but dubious about the practicalities of having ice cream with Scotch.
We sat down to four different whiskies, each with a different flavour profile. Each of these whiskies was accompanied by a specially paired whisky ice cream.
The Whisky specialist expertly talked us through each of the four whiskies that were in front of us. The first an Oaky and Vanilla flavoured 13yr old Scotch which was paired with a “Snowball Seduction” whisky ice cream, which carried storng hints of vanilla and pieces of coconut, alongside the unmistakable taste of the whisky piercing through the ice cream.
The second whisky was the oldest of the lot a 30yr old spicy and dry offering. The whisky expert explained that there is a common misconception that the older the whisky the better – this often isn’t the case. However, he did caveat that by saying that this particular whisky is a particularly good one. It was paired with a “Ginger Rasta” ice cream which complemented the whisky profile perfectly. A mouthful of ice cream, followed by a sip of the whisky really seemed to bring the flavours out of the drink – each flavour combination complimented each other perfectly.
The third whisky was arguably the star of the show. A deep, rich dram with strong fruity flavours. This particular whisky was an Irish whisky and the flavours were intense – but in a good way. We’d never tasted a whisky quite like it….but it was phenomenal (Cask No. 117.5 in case you’re interested in buying some). This was paired with our favourite of the ice creams – the Cherry Popper.
The final whisky was a heavily peated serve, hailing from Islay. If you like Peaty whiskies then this one will most certainly be for you….it was one of the most heavily peated whiskies we’ve tasted…..but in a very good way. It was paired with a delightful Smoky Lavender Kiss ice cream – the lavender perfectly complimenting the strong smoky flavour of the whisky.
So how do you get your very own chance to try the taste sensation that is “Ice Dream Drams”?
Well throughout July, the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s venue at 19 Greville Street in Farringdon will be hosting a series of special ‘Ice Dream Drams’ tasting sessions. Guests will sample four flavours of whisky ice cream alongside four drams of the whisky used to make the ice cream. The ticketed events, costing £15, will take place on 8th, 16th, 22nd July.
The 12 ice creams created by S Luca are made with the Society’s single cask whisky. The ice creams reflect the Society’s flavour-based approach to whisky, which is based on its 12 unique whisky flavour profiles such as Sweet, Fruity and Mellow; Spicy & Sweet; and Young & Spritely.
Tickets for the events throughout July are available from here, but be quick as there are only 21 spaces at each event – and trust us….once word gets out about how good these ice cream and whisky combos are….these tickets will be like Gold dust.
If nothing else it’s a fantastic opportunity to try some incredible whiskies, take a look at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society building and what it has to offer while picking the brains of whisky experts. We genuinely can’t think of any better way to spend a summer’s evening.
