Is there a lovelier London landmark than St Paul’s Cathedral? Well, possibly, but when you’re on a rooftop watching the evening sun light up the majestic dome with a cocktail in hand, it’s pretty difficult to think of one.

That’s exactly where I found myself for the launch of Caketails at Madison. The restaurant at the very top of One New Change with views to rival the best of them has released a series of mini cupcakes based on the flavours of their most popular cocktails. Their sweeping terrace gives unrivalled views of the Cathedral, and is the ideal spot to eke out the last of the longer evenings before the winter sets in. Having said that though, I would imagine it’s rather romantic to bundle up and brave the cold on a dry day.

We were very dutiful in our tasting and the mini marvels were delicious – delicate bakes with dreamy buttercream icing, all in your favourite cocktail flavours. The personal favourite was the Basilico but each one was a winner, and pairing them with the drinks was a great idea. The taste of the cocktail was set off brilliantly by the sweet treats. Each one was just the right size, the rich flavours would be lost if you had to have a larger one. The perfect mouthful to go with a well-made cocktail.

Take your pick – the Espresso Martini, made with fresh espresso shaken over ice with Kahlua, Ketel One and Gomme syrup – Basilico, a blend of Ketel One with Creme de Mure, Gomme, fresh lemon and basil – a classic Dark adn Stormy with Goslings Tum, lime juice, ginger beer and a touch of Angostura Bitters – and the classic Cosmopolitan, with Ketel One Citron, Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice. There’s a little in there for every palate.

Each has their own charms and are a great excuse to get some more cake into your diet (an underrated food group in my opinion) as they’re practically drinks. Which are also very important. I should also give a nod to the staff here, very diligent and attentive you can imagine how a full dinner would be a dream to enjoy.
Although I keep coming back to it, it was very hard to think of a better place to watch the sun go down over the greatest city in the world.
