Our recent trip across the pond to New York found Dapper Chapper in a bit of a quandary. It was freezing cold but we didn’t want to lose face by covering up to look like an extra from Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
The cold streets of NYC can be unforgiving, especially if you have a day of pounding the pavements on what could be described as an ill-timed venture to research emerging fashion brands from all over Brooklyn and the Lower East Side.
On our search to find the right footwear (the plan was originally to wear pale yellow Gazelles) we stumbled across and old friend doing great things – ohw? Shoes.
Our problem of achieving a warm, comfortable style alternative for the job was quashed when ohw? packed us off with their brand new Ambler boot and perhaps the best backpack we’ve ever owned.
The Ambler is a distinctive stylish piece of footwear. The ohw? traditional thick white rubber/phylon sole acts as the foundation for a boot that looks effortlessly strong and features Goodyear welted plain leather front.
Built up snuggly around the ankle to sit a little higher, the seven-eyelet Ambler is comfort personified and perfect for both long city or rougher terrain walks, with creative uses of complimentary black suede and grey wool.
Versatility is the key to ohw? The Ambler, as well as many other styles can be worn with tailored sweatpants, denim or tailored trousers tucked into the top of the boot for a military feel, so we more than enjoyed playing with wearable concepts.
The complimentary grey wool and tan leather backpack was just an added bonus, but we fell in love with it. Hidden compartments (always a treat) and a close, comfortable but sophisticated aesthetic meant for an enjoyable days wear.
The backpack features a roll-over top with zip fastening and can be worn both as a backpack or equally as a tote style carrier with leather studded clasp to gather the two handles.
The vision of two industry experts the ohw? mission statement is simple – to bring a fresh approach to men’s footwear with contemporary and functional design at its heart.
Collaborating with leading footwear designers to translate their pick of the latest trends, ohw? work closely with a production team in China to develop their concepts to reality incorporating function as a core priority.
Materials they use range from premium suede and nubuck through to full grain leathers. Every pair comes with all leather laces, linings and socks, as well as authentic details such as hand-stitching. Every pair of ohw? shoes is even individually hand-signed by the person in our factory doing the final quality check.
The Ambler is priced at £160 and the backpack at £200, both available from www.ohwshoes.com. For further information please visit the website.
