The Interview: John Robertson

By Alex Noble Friday 8th Apr, 2016

We caught up with John Robertson, the man behind the fashion and lifestyle blog, The Everyday Man, to pick his brains.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I was actually talked into it by a friend of mine. She had just started a blog and thought I would be good at curating one of my own so with a little help I got started. To start with I had very little idea of my theme or direction but a few months in things became a little clearer and The Everyday Man was born.

Who’s your style icon?

Without doubt David Beckham. A pioneer for everyday men everywhere: he made it ok for guys to take an interest in fashion and style and the population have really embraced it. He always looks bloody good too.

Where do you see men’s fashion going in the next 5-10 years?

That is a hard one as things change so quickly. Fashion in general seems to be going in a bit of an ungendered direction so anything might happen. Classic menswear tailored looks will never die though. You can’t really compete with a well fitted suit.

Your current favourite designers and places to shop? And if you can say, why?

I’m not one to spend an absolute fortune on high end clothing. I do tend to do most of my shopping online and really love the likes of COS, Reiss and Zara. That said I love my sportswear too, in particular trainers.

What’s your best perk of being a blogger?

The travel. It really is amazing as the blog has opened so many doors and taken me all over the world in a short space of time, I’m really lucky to be able to do what I do.

If you could travel back to any decade for the fashion what would it be?

The 50s. Both the men and the women in that decade looked fantastic. Absolute class personified!

Have you any advice for an aspiring fashion blogger?

Don’t get too ahead of yourself and just enjoy what you do. Don’t think you have to jump on a bandwagon, write about your genuine interests and your own taste. Be honest too, people appreciate it.
