The Dapper Chapper Bar – Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select

By Neil Brotherston Thursday 22nd Jan, 2015

There’s something very dapper about a bottle of alcohol that you know is truly unique to you. The knowledge that what you have inside your bottle, is yours, and yours only. Only you can choose who gets to taste the unique taste of your bottle.

Well that’s exactly the case with Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Select. This particular version of Jack Daniels is bottled from a single barrel, specifically selected by the Master Distiller for its special qualities. Every now and again he will come across a barrel that is just that little bit more special than the rest of the batch.

In fact only one barrel out of roughly every 100 produced is of sufficient Gold standard, to be set aside for the Single Barrel treatment. Once selected, the barrel is set-aside in the highest reaches of the Jack Daniels Barrelhouses, where it is matured and exerted to a dramatic temperature change, which results in the dramatic dark colour of the liquid in the bottle you see before you.

For a barrel to be selected, it has to have what Jack Daniel’s call a “One of a kind flavour”. This is a drink that has strong notes of oak, toasted caramel and subtle vanilla.

Each barrel produces around 240 bottles of Jack Daniels Single Barrel. So while you’re not quite the only person in the world that can ever try that particular whisky, you are safe in the knowledge that only 239 other people have that choice……not a bad exclusive little club to be part of.

Now it’s safe to say that this is not a whisky for the faint-hearted. The beauty of it being drawn from a single barrel, rather than being blended, is that it has a much stronger flavour and taste profile. It is strong, and it will hit that back of your throat and stay there for a while with a little burn. The strong oak flavours are neatly complimented by the vanilla and caramel undertones….but it still remains a strong whisky.

But in our eyes, that makes it a good whisky. If this is your first step up into the ‘stronger’ end of the whisky market, then we’d recommend this one on ice, rather than neat and it could be a little overwhelming to the untrained palate, without ice in the equation.

So on that note, our recommendation for trying this drink is simply this:

Ingredients:

50ml Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel

Dash of bitters

Twist of Orange

Method:

Add a few cubes of Ice to your whisky tumbler.

Pour over the Jack Daniel’s Single barrel and add a few splashes of bitters.

Place and orange twist on top to add a citrusy note.

Enjoy, knowing that only 239 other people have the opportunity to try this drink.
