Will sir be having the steak – or the steak? Following in the footsteps of some of the most lauded one-ingredient restaurants like Smack Lobster, Madd and Meatballs, The Orange Elephant has just one thing on it’s mind. Thick, juicy, cross hatched and smoked, cooked to perfection 32-day aged 12oz steaks. Each one is carefully sourced from a selection of independent British farms that rear the particular native cow – you guessed it, The Orange Elephant – so named for it’s stunning rust-coloured coat and oversized face and ears.
Not only is the breed significant, but each one is cooked in that beaut of a machine, the Big Green Egg. A hero of the barbeque world, the ceramic eggs manage to not only perfectly sear the steaks to keep in the juicy flavour but smoke and roast them at the same time thanks to the intense yet carefully controlled charcoal heat. This results in some of the tenderest char-grilled morsels we’ve had the pleasure of being acquainted with. Each steak is served with their signature sauce, a side of salad and of course chunky hand cut chips for just £20.
For the more adventurous among you (or you old romantics who want to share a prime piece of meat with their significant other) there’s also the Tomahawk – a hulk of a steak designed to share, served on the bone for added wow factor. And for anyone who doesn’t fancy a steak, their creamy gourmet Mac n’ Cheese will definitely please.
What might surprise you is the cocktail and wine lists, a great variety in the first instance and some very deliberate and well-chosen pairings in the second. They have taken the hassle out of choosing, simply look for your price range and you’ll spot a winner. Thankfully there’s also some fantastic cheese boards for dessert, and smooth, rich seasonal ice cream on the (non) menu too.
The variety of wooden tones through the entire interior give a warmth to the place, with carefully hued lighting panels in the walls, elements of exposed brick and highlights of copper in lamps and kitchen utensils that catch the light quite nicely. An ideal spot for a relaxed dinner or long lunch, so long as you like your steak, of course.
