Black Cow: Vodka Made from Milk

By Neil Brotherston Wednesday 25th May, 2016

There are plenty of drinks brands out there that claim they are the “world’s finest”, the “world’s most premium” or the “highest quality in the world”. But there aren’t many that can claim they are “the world’s ONLY”.

Well that’s exactly what Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka can legitimately claim. Today we’re reviewing a vodka that is made entirely from the milk of grass fed cows born and bred in West Dorset. Yes you heard that correctly – milk.

Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka is the brainchild of West Dorset dairy farmer Jason Barber and his 250 strong herd of cows. He wanted to diversify the output of his dairy farm and held a strong personal interest in vodka – so naturally he combined the two to make milk vodka.

The process of using milk to produce alcohol is a common tradition in country’s like Mongolia and parts of Russia, where the natural sugars in the milk are fermented to produce alcoholic liquids.

The milk that is produced by Jason’s cows is separated into curds and whey. The curds are used to produce cheese, while the whey is used to make the alcohol. It is originally fermented into a beer, using special yeast that converts the natural sugar in the milk and turns it into alcohol.

This beer is then distilled and put through what Black Cow call their “Secret blending process” which turns it into a vodka, before it is triple distilled and then hand bottled.

The beauty of Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka is that it is made from exactly the same milk that is used to make Black Cow’s own Deluxe Cheddar cheese. So it is little surprise that they say the vodka is best tasted alongside a plate of cheese (Black Cow Deluxe Cheddar no doubt).

It really is a strange thing to sit down at a table with a glass of vodka and a plate of cheese in front of you, knowing that both have come from exactly the same cow’s milk. It boggles the mind slightly.

It’s safe to say we really didn’t have any idea what to expect when sitting down to taste Black Cow. I mean – what the hell does milk vodka taste like? Turns out it tastes incredibly smooth, creamy and has a slight hint of vanilla and cinnamon to it, with faint hints of lime zest.

It really is unlike any other vodka we’ve ever tasted. We’re not quite sure why this hasn’t taken off big style yet, because trust us it’s bloody brilliant.

While there are many cocktails we could suggest you make out of Black Cow Pure Milk Vodka, we think it would be rude not suggest a glass over ice with some Black Cow Deluxe Cheddar to accompany it.

After all, what could be more Dapper than a cheese board and some milk vodka?
